Analysis of Superoscillatory Wave Functions

چکیده
Surprisingly, differentiable functions are able to oscillate arbitrarily faster than their highest Fourier component would suggest. The phenomenon is called superoscillation. Recently, a practical method for calculating superoscillatory functions was presented and it was shown that superoscillatory quantum mechanical wave functions should exhibit a number of counter-intuitive physical effects. Following up on this work, we here present more general methods which allow the calculation of superoscillatory wave functions with custom-designed physical properties. We give concrete examples and we prove results about the limits to superoscillatory behavior. We also give a simple and intuitive new explanation for the exponential computational cost of superoscillations.

Superoscillations and tunneling times
It is proposed that superoscillations play an important role in the interferences that give rise to superluminal effects. To exemplify that, we consider a toy model that a wave packet to travel in zero time and negligible distortion, a distance arbitrarily larger than the width of the wave packet. The peak is shown to result from a superoscillatory superposition at the tail. Similar reasoning a...
متن کاملSuperluminal tunnelling times as weak values
We consider the tunnelling particle as a preand post-selected system and prove that the tunnelling time is the expectation value of the position of a ‘clock’ degree of freedom weakly coupled to it. Such a value, called a ‘weak value’, typically falls outside the eigenvalue spectrum of the operator. The appearance of unusual weak values has been associated with a unique interference structure ca...
متن کاملSuperoscillation in speckle patterns.
Waves are superoscillatory where their local phase gradient exceeds the maximum wavenumber in their Fourier spectrum. We consider the superoscillatory area fraction of random optical speckle patterns. This follows from the joint probability density function of intensity and phase gradient for isotropic Gaussian random wave superpositions. Strikingly, this fraction is 1/3 when all the waves in t...

متن کاملStability analysis of concrete gravity basestructures in rocking motion under wave effect
Given the worldwide industry progress in the construction of massive concrete structures, it would be a good idea to use concrete gravity base structures (GBS).In this regard, better understanding of thesestructuresregardingtheiradvantages and disadvantages in offshore areas seems necessary. The present study employed MacCammy-Fuchs method, which is based on the size of the structure to the wave...
